    FAQ about Giclée Prints

    What is a giclée?

Giclées are state of the art replications of an original painting that use fade-resistant, archival, pigment based inks. They are not to be confused with posters or other digital prints using typical ink-jet printing. Giclées are produced from high resolution photographs taken by a professional and specialized art photographer. The work is then printed using advanced color control technology. It provides better color accuracy then any other means of production. Per print, professionally-produced prints are much more expensive than the four-color offset lithography process traditionally used for reproductions (the cost of producing one giclee, not including photography and color correction often costs 20-30 times the cost of a litho print of the same image). Giclées are virtually indistinguishable from the original and allow buyers to enjoy the beauty of the image for a lower price.

    How long do giclées last?

It is estimated that using the high quality inks and archival paper, giclées will last approximately 100 years under standard conditions. Prints made on canvas cannot be guaranteed to last the same time frame. However, for both paper options, Deirdre McCay is committed to using only the highest quality pigment inks which have been proven to withstand the effects of light and humidity.

    What is a limited-edition giclée?

Furthermore, the print will display the series number at the bottom.

Do giclées have a high resale value?

Have museums demonstrated interest in giclées?

These include the Louvre Museum, the Smithsonian, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Washington Post collection, the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) amongst countless others.
